English As a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are for students whose native language is not English and want to improve speaking, reading and writing skills.

Placement decisions are based on an entry assessment using the Basic English Skills Test (BEST Plus) and are placed in one of the following levels.

• Level 1 & 2 (Beginner): for students with little or no English speaking skills.

• Level 3 & 4 (Intermediate): for students with basic conversational skills in English seeking to improve speaking, reading and writing skills.

• Level 5 & 6 (Advanced Level): for students who demonstrate adequate speaking skills and practice with reading and writing in English.

Students who register at Barry Tech and St. Bernard’s are placed into leveled classes based on BEST Plus results. Other locations may instruct more than one level in a class.
