Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is for students who need goal-specific elementary or secondary-level basic skills such as work related math, functional literacy, reading, or writing assistance. This course prepares students to enter a General Education Development (GED) course of study. Placement decisions are based on an entry assessment using the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), which assesses reading and math skills. TABE results places students in one of the following levels: • Level 1: Forming sentences, identifying letter sound relationships, addition and subtraction of whole numbers. This level is appropriate for students transitioning from ESL to an ABE class. • Level 2: Gathering information from text and pictures (comprehension), identifying cause and effect, basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (number operations) of whole numbers, introduction of common math vocabulary . • Level 3: Evaluate meaning identifying the main idea from reading passages, using number operations with decimals and fractions, solving word problems *Other locations may instruct more than one level in a class.
